A Journey of Growth and Inspiration: My Teaching Experience at St. Thomas HSS
My internship at St. Thomas HSS, Erumely was one of the most unforgettable and enriching experiences of my life. This was my second opportunity to teach students of classes 8 and 9, and I was assigned to teach Physics in Class 8 and Chemistry in Class 9. From the very beginning, I felt a deep sense of responsibility and excitement as I stepped into the role of a teacher. Teaching these subjects was not just about delivering lessons from the textbooks but about making them relatable and engaging for the students. I learned how to connect theoretical concepts with real-world examples, making learning enjoyable and meaningful for my students. During this journey, I found myself growing into a guide and mentor, understanding the unique needs and potentials of my students, and supporting them in their academic and personal growth. Building rapport with my students came naturally as I genuinely enjoyed spending time with them. I took value education classes, where I had the privilege of instilling important values in their young minds, shaping their characters beyond academics. These classes often became a platform for open discussions, fostering trust and respect between us. I also actively participated in co-curricular activities, conducting club programs and contributing to arts work, which added color and creativity to the school environment. One of the highlights of my internship was Sports Day, where I, along with my friend, had the responsibility of organizing and conducting the shot put event. Watching the enthusiasm and sportsmanship of the students made it a truly memorable experience. Similarly, Arts Day was a celebration of talent and creativity, and seeing my students perform and showcase their abilities filled me with pride and happiness.
Throughout my internship, I was fortunate to have the guidance of my mentor teacher, Suja Abraham. Her warmth and support created a homely atmosphere, and she patiently guided me in honing my teaching skills. The other teachers at St. Thomas HSS were equally supportive, sharing their wisdom and experiences, which significantly shaped my path as a teacher. The camaraderie and teamwork with my fellow interns also added to the overall experience, making the days lively and fulfilling.
As the internship drew to a close, I was overwhelmed by a mix of emotions. The last day was particularly tough, as I realized I was bidding farewell to a place that had become so special to me. The classrooms where I taught, the staff room where we shared our ideas and stories, and the students who had become an integral part of my daily life – everything held a sentimental value. Saying goodbye to my students, who had given me immense joy and a sense of purpose, was heart-wrenching. The bond we had created, the lessons we shared, and the memories we made will always hold a special place in my heart. My internship days at St. Thomas HSS were not just about teaching but about growing, learning, and experiencing the joy of making a difference in the lives of young minds.
